1.
What special procedures will I need to learn for SociologyOnline?
Using SociologyOnline
is as simple for both instructors and students as navigating these
preview pages.
Getting started
is also uncomplicated. Once you send us the material that you would
like to have included in your Course Guidebook area (e.g., the course
syllabus, old exams), your work in setting up SociologyOnline
is finished. We will create those pages for you, and we will configure
your message board(s) for the kinds of discussions you plan to have.
Of course, if you already have a course work web site, we will link
SociologyOnline directly to it. And if you would like to
configure your own message board, you can. Just let us know and
we will send you the URL for the control panel, along with an audio
file that will guide you through the process (a seven-minute tutorial).
We want the
technology behind SociologyOnline to be as unobtrusive as it is
powerful, and we think we've made it that way.

How can students access the web site and textbook, and what is the
cost?
Access
to all contents of SociologyOnline is by subscription. Students
register online, paying either with credit cards over a secure server
or by check or money order. Subscriptions are for the duration of
the semester/quarter.
The
cost of a subscription to SociologyOnline and a loosleaf
(three-hole punched) copy of the textbook is $36. Subscriptions
alone are $30.

7.
How can SociologyOnline be customized for my course? Is there
a charge for this service?
Customization
is free of charge. There are a number of ways that we can tailor
SociologyOnline to your particular course.
We will put
several kinds of material on the web for you, if you'd like, and
we'll integrate your pages into the main pages of SociologyOnline.
Alternatively, if you have your own web site, we can link SociologyOnline
to it. Either way, student users will be able to go back and forth
effortlessly between the core pages of SociologyOnline and
your own web pages. It doesn't take any work
on your part to make it happen, and students find this approach
very appealing. In effect, the entire web site is personalized at
the same time that all of the resources for your class, from textbook
to research resources and interaction tools and your unique class
materials, are brought together for improved usability.
If we create
web pages for you, here are some possibilities, among others that
you may want to specify:
- your course
syllabus
- illustrative
exams
- study guides
- class lecture
notes
- links (to
your university library, to your computing center, to university
support services)
Or, if you
already have a web site, we can put your home page in the Course
Guidebook frameset.
We are happy
to include photos on web pages that we create for you and will scan
them for you if you don't already have scanned image files.

What resources are provided for instructors who use SociologyOnline?
In
addition to our customization services, we provide a number of resources
to help you use SociologyOnline effectively.
You
will receive an instructor's manual with suggestions for structuring
online discussions (both real-time and asynchronous) and items for
online discussions that draw on the themes of each textbook subject
-- approaches that have been extensively field tested with a large
number of introductory students.
There
is a test bank with exam questions written by Lynn Nelson. In addition
to the anthology of online supplementary readings that accompanies
the textbook, we'll send you periodic newsletters that update the
reading list with newly available material and that highlight additional
resources you may find useful.
We
provide rapid-response e-mail support for questions and problems
that may arise at any time.

9.
Can SociologyOnline be combined with such course work systems
as Blackboard, WebCT and TopClass?
It
is a simple matter to link SociologyOnline to other course
work software, such as Blackboard. We will do that for you.

10.
Are students permitted to share accounts?
Account
sharing is not allowed. Our method of managing accounts is through
message board usage. It is for this reason that message board assignments
are expected to be a required feature of courses in which SociologyOnline
is used.

The textbook
will be revised each year. Revisions and additions will be uploaded
to the server during the first two weeks of every August.

12.
How often do you check for broken external links?
We
check for broken links every Friday and make necessary changes to
web pages each weekend (deleting broken links and replacing them
with substitutes, when possible).

13.
How important are the audio files to the way students use SociologyOnline?
Audio files
add a valuable dimension to the textbook and to SociologyOnline
more generally. That said, this course work package offers notable
features, separate from the audio material. If your university labs
do not yet have audio capability, you may want to consider choosing
the version we offer of SociologyOnline which does not include
audio files.
